There a lot of growers out there, at least in the states, using LED lighting and they are actually pulling higher weights than they did with the hps.

The advancements in LED have come in leaps and bounds the last year and a half or so, driven by our medical marijuana states of course, and is for sure something to keep our eye on. My best growing pal on the boards has been vegging under LEDs for more than a year now with awesome results, and just this week replaced all the flowering lights with special order LEDs from China. If they work in his hydro lab the way he thinks they will, I might consider a change over from the 1ks myself.

And this is a guy harvesting a minimum of a pound every week from his perpetual hydro lab, not a closet grower for personal use, he wouldn't make any change in his grow if he didn't firmly believe it would be a benefit.

It's for sure a lighting option to watch, and to do a lot of reading on. You can't make an assumption based on one thread on one forum when there are successful LED grows all over the net.

It was almost 3k for 5 lights custom made for his space. He told me today that already the a/c is running a fraction of the time that it was with the 1ks, 3 fans are completely shut off, as well as a few other things that had to be on with the 1ks.

I believe he did the math and he'll be 18 months getting back his return on his investment in the lights via savings in electric, then after that he'll be in the black.

I've seen lots of growing with leds but honestly I don't feel curious about it. Maybe its because every time I see them prices on the shop my curiosity evaporates.

That must be a difference I don't know...
"Every time I plant a seed, he said kill it before it grow, he said kill them before they grow. And so I shot him down..."

Melvan good luck to your mate but 3K is a fair investment and obviously ones grow would have to warrant it so unless they come down a lot in price the majority of people just simply cannot afford them.
If i spent a quarter of that my wife would feed me my testicles.
All have a good weekend.

Hey,

just to agree with Melvan, LED's are coming on at a fantastic rate. The company I worked for has just won the contract to put the in Karachi air port as spot lights for the parameter, the lighting specialist recons there will be some even better products coming to market soon.

The thing that is pushing the drive is emissions and costs.

im really tempted by ledz, its a shame theres no real data out there that doesnt come from the manufacturers who would say it made the tea in the morning if it sold a unit, sure theres the odd grow log but im skeptical at the best of times so would need to see cold hard impartial facts before making the leap also a drop in the cost which will probably happen in the next few years

For anyone interested in comparing led,s with hps.go to philips global website and look for "growing your profits"you can download the leaflet.it explains the difference between lux which is what the eye sees and photosynthetic photon flux(ppf) which is what plants use,its a more acurate way of measuring light available to plants.and also there are loads of fact sheets showing outputs of new greenpower led,s and hps for comparison.ie light output per watt and also lamp life etc..
