here is something i think is a myth. people say humidity domes are good for seedlings.
i often see people putting there new sprouts and young seedlings under humidity domes. In my experience as a grower this is a very bad practice and can cause all sorts of problems with your young plants. many different types off fungus and moulds will thrive under these conditions and may cause "damping off" and death of your seedlings. in my opinion nothing beats fresh circulating air especially in these early stages when plants are so fragile. i am very interested to hear what others have to say on the topic |

I don't think they're usually necessary for seedlings.
Some kind of humidity cover or a propagator can help a lot with clones. Since they don't have roots at first, keeping them in a very high-humidity environment and allowing them to absorb moisture through their leaves can help them survive long enough to root. If a propagator/dome is kept clean, it shoudn't increase the chances of fungus much, though when working with soil, a completely sterile environment is not really an option. The biggest problem with seedlings in a propagator is that it will deny them access to constantly moving air, which is very important for strengthening their stems. If a grower was trying to raise seedlings in a very dry environment, a propagator might help, but it would need to be removed regularly (one or more times per day) to allow a breeze to reach the seedlings. Even in this case, it's probably easier to increase the humidity in the whole vegetation/seedling area. Very young seedlings growing outside (or being acclimatised) in a hot or overly windy environment could benefit from a propagator until they're big enough to handle the weather on their own. |

if you are using a propagator outside, keep it out of direct sunshine... they will over heat very quickly in direct sunshine.

The trick when using the dome is not to leave it on once the seeds have popped through the grow medium. The high humidity helps them germ quickly, especially if you're like me and sow seed direct to your grow medium.
But, once they're up, the seedlings stretch like crazy if left in the high humidity. |
