It seems like Bernie Sanders is the closest thing out there to a presidential candidate that's pro-legalization (at least at this stage). According to this article, he considers marijuana prohibition to be a waste of money and efforts. Do you think other presidential candidates might become more vocal about legalization if this goes over well for Sanders?

politicians will jump on any band wagon to get votes and then recant when in office. surely common sense will have to prevail eventually, not that it ever does.

Yeah, I think the president is just the mouthpiece for something much more intricate anyway.

besides, without these new numbers of arrests and imprisonments how would the for profit prison system survive? i think the war on drugs is an epic disaster and some fresh thinking could be used. quite where that will come in an age of political dinosaurs and entrenched interests i really dont know.

Maybe the general public need to change enough for the politicians to ride the wave of the popular consensus. It's all about how much the average person will tolerate.

You don't believe that people can change politics? Look at the French Revolution.

past performance is no indicator of future trends. if the french governments forces back then had tear gas, pepper spray, water cannons and the like me thinks history would read a little differently...

I agree with you that the past does not necessarily equate to the present. However, I also believe that people will only take so much, regardless of riot gear.

when the people are starving past the point of eating their own children then maybe. but when faced with live ammunition and tear gas your usual joe in the street will put up with plenty. besides if the government turned the money supply and internet off what would people do then. the revolution will not be televised and the news will be manipulated to seem like it never happened.
