Hi Deephouse

Firstly love your avatar, is the cat yours ?

Best leave the carbon filter design to the experts man, As far as i know there are unique ways of making them with machines that pour the carbon extract into the cylinders and then they seal them really well, carbon isnt something you want to play with, i would have thought. Hense the doods making them with protective clothing and stuff

They are expensive but a necessity these days to go undetected.

Welcome aboard

It appears that activated carbon isn't dangerous, even if you may not want to breath it all day long  ("Activated carbon is used to treat poisonings and overdoses by oral ingestion"    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activated_carbon )

That said a commercial carbon filter has chances to be more efficient than a home made one.

Yeah, since the object is to filter as much odour as physically possible from the air that's extracted from your grow-room, you really are better off with a commercial model that's been engineered to do the job.

As far as carbon being a hazardous material, I think it's about as neutral as you can get if you eat it (and it's a good absorber of toxins), but you wouldn't want to breathe micro-particles of it for 8 hours a day, if your job is to construct the filters.

I think all tiny particles can have horrible effects if you breathe them for significant periods of time. Asbestosis is an extreme example, but I think exposure to sawdust, flour, cement and any other airborne dust can kill in the long term.

Possibly, the effect of breathing carbon particles for many years would be like 'black lung' suffered by coal miners.

And don’t get me started on the potential hazards of rockwool dust. Just be sure never to work with it when it’s dry. When wet, you can tear it without creating a cloud of glass-fibres.

ok there was a great homemade carbon scrubber for about $50 dollars in materials on overgrow back before its unfortunate demise .... it consisted of 6 inch and 8 inch round air supply ductwork , 2 pair of xl queen size panty hose , hardware cloth , hose clamps ,some poly fill and of course activated carbon. i built one using thier plan (i think the person called themself "sun is shining") it works really well ..... if you can understand/recognize the fore mentioned items i'll try to post some step by step instructions ....

With cost of materials and time spent putting em together, a bought carbon filter can still be cheaper
