There are a lot of things to find on the internet regarding Marijuana and it's religions/ beliefs. Besides the obvious Bob/ Rasta fari/ Jamaicans who with their god Jah. Marijnuana goes back 1000's of years. Cannabis, has been, and still is, a Holy plant in many cultures on all the continents that it grows on, and it grows in nearly every continent on our beautifull planet, and in nearly every country. Here is one of the sites I stumbled over. It has some nice historical facts and discusses the many sides of our lovely plant. http://www.thc-ministry.net Bye for now |

Not sure about the state of affairs in India either, though I'd be very interested in finding out.
I'm guessing that ganja and hashish are still officially illegal, but there are many more exceptions than in most countries. IIRC, India maintained a sane attitude to cannabis for longer than most countries. I think the first serious attempt to prohibit the psychoactive side of the plant was seen in the mid Eighties, when most of the businesses that specialised in cannabis were forced to close. I know that bhang (the drink) is still widely consumed, with little or no legal restriction (probably varies a lot by province). There are still shops and stalls that openly sell bhang, but I don't know if they're likely to sell weed and hash. I've heard from a couple of Indian residents (one in Kerala) that the attempt to cast cannabis as 'evil' in the prohibition of the mid-Eighties is widely regarded with amusement. That's not to say that no-one is arrested, or that police do not try to catch traders or tourists with cannabis, but I don't think many people see it as much more than another legal technicality. Naturally, whatever ban remains is lifted during certain festivals and holy days, including Holi. I was very pleased to come across the official Indian website of the Holi festival and find that they were enthusiastic about bhang (the official Holi drink)! http://www.holifestival.org/tradition-of-bhang.html It's nice to see that real customs take precedence over recent, irrational laws, even if only for a few days. There are many, many other important festivals in India and who knows how many of them include bhang or other forms of cannabis as part of the traditional celebrations? http://www.indias.com/indiasDigest-36/eventsfestivals.html I'm not sure whether sadus smoking their sacraments to Shiva are ever hassled by Indian law enforcement. |

thanks for that lengthy reply. It seems that India natives are more "spiritually" oriented if you will, and have a lot of earth based type religious views. I'll keep searching it out. I'm looking for an international site like the Norml US site - does anyone know of one? The people that I've met from India are some of the nicest I've come across but I've yet to ask them about the ganja
