Halogen does not put out the correct spectrum of light to flower cannabis. You may be able to keep a plant alive with the light froma 400w halogen, but you're unlikely to produce much bud. And you'll burn the same power as using a 400w high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp.

Proper lights need not cost a fortune, and they have the advantage of being proper lights, which will allow thick, healthy flowering.

You should be able to get a working 400w fitting (2nd hand is fine) with a new bulb for around 100-150 pounds.

In Amsterdam, we sell a used 400w fitting for EUR.80, plus EUR 35 for a new bulb, which would work out 70 or 80 quid. We can't send the 2nd hand lamp by post, unfortunately.

But you should be able to find something like this for less than 150 pounds in the UK.

If not, fluorescents are a good, cheap option for growing. You'll need a few of them (say four to six 120cm tubes per square metre), or one of the new, giant CF (compact fluorescent) bulbs.

Fluoros will not produce as much bud an an HPS, but they cost much less and use much less power.
