A koala drinking some life-giving water hand fed by a volenteer firefighter of our CountryFireAuthority (CFA) during Black Saturday in the summer of 2009, only a few weeks ago. Temperature on the day this picture was taken soared to over 45degC and fed more by the heat of a burning forest. The following day it reached 48degC and remained over 44degC for another week. What made matters even worse than that was the massive hole in the O-zone layer above Melbourne which can burn human skin to a blister within a couple of hours of direct exposure on a sunny summer's day when the air temperature is as little as 34degC; higher, and you're in real trouble if you have exposed skin and can't get out of the sun. Many hundreds perished, many thousands ended up in hospital beds. The toll on the people was horrendous. Lest we forget Mother Nature's beauty and fury.
